Biography
Dr. Schuffler, Professor of Medicine, is recognized worldwide for his expertise in the treatment of gastrointestinal motility disorders, such as esophageal motility disorders, gastroparesis, intestinal pseudo-obstruction, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, colonic inertia, pelvic floor dyssynergia, and fecal incontinence. He is renowned for his past research characterizing the pathology of the muscles and nerves of the gastrointestinal tract that cause many of these disorders.
Dr. Schuffler has been a highly respected member of the GI Division faculty for over 40 years. After graduating from the University of Illinois Medical School, Dr. Schuffler did two years of internship and residency at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago and then came to the University of Washington to complete his residency in internal medicine. Fully intending to begin a fellowship in Nephrology, Dr. Schuffler was, instead, lured into Gastroenterology by two great mentors, Drs. Wade Volwiler and David Saunders, both former heads of the GI Division. It was during his fellowship that a lifetime interest in GI motility disorders was sparked.
