Biography

Michael J. Shen, MD, PhD, was a gastroenterology fellow at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his internal medicine residency at NYU Langone Health after earning his MD and PhD through the NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Medical Scientist Training Program.

His doctoral research in the Boeke Lab focused on rapid evolution using semisynthetic yeast genomes. He previously studied biomedical engineering at Johns Hopkins University, graduating with honors and minors in applied mathematics and statistics.

Before and during his medical training, Dr. Shen held several research positions. At the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, he worked in the Park Lab on microglial immunotherapy for glioma and developed stem‑cell–based microglial differentiation protocols. As an undergraduate researcher in the Yue Lab at Johns Hopkins, he contributed molecular standards used to reconcile two major models of Förster Resonance Energy Transfer in live cells.
