The Gastroenterology Fellowship at the University of Washington has been providing training in research, clinical gastroenterology, and teaching since 1950. Our mission is to train fellows for highly successful careers in academic medicine, who become experts and leaders in clinical and research arenas.

Program Focus

The focus of our program is to educate trainees to become:

  • Compassionate gastroenterologists with the necessary cognitive, technical, and interpersonal skills to provide outstanding care to patients with gastrointestinal and liver diseases;
  • Engaging teachers with the ability and enthusiasm to educate future trainees and colleagues about gastroenterology and hepatology; and
  • Inquisitive and dedicated investigators with the skills to advance the underlying scientific basis for the care of patients with gastrointestinal and liver diseases.

The Gastroenterology Fellowship offers three different training tracks

Pathways:

  • The 3-year clinician-teacher track

    The 3-year clinician-teacher track

  • The 4-year physician-scientist track (NIH/T32-funded)
  • The 3-year Dual Gastroenterology/Transplant Hepatology Track (third year)

We also offer a one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship in Transplant Hepatology or a fourth year of non-ACGME-accredited training in Advanced Endoscopy.

Training Sites

We have clinical responsibilities and research operations in five unique training sites in the Seattle area.

Fellows regularly rotate through each of the training sites, which include a quaternary academic referral center, a Level I trauma center and community safety net hospital, a Veteran Affairs hospital, and a nationally ranked cancer care and research center, in order to provide exposure to the full breadth of gastroenterology and practice patterns that currently exist.
