Procedures and Disease Management
Advanced fellows can look forward to involvement in approximately 1,000 advanced procedures per year using state-of-the-art equipment. The Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy Fellowship often works with the industry to test prototypes, allowing us to be in the cutting edge of technology. Aside from ERCP, EUS, and balloon enteroscopy training, fellows gain exposure to more advanced EUS procedures such as conduit formation and abscess drainage. We also perform ESD, though currently this is not part of the formal training.
Attending Endoscopy and Clinical Service Duty
The advanced fellow will have one full day of outpatient endoscopy every week to support their salary. The time and day will vary depending on the space and needs of the division.
The fellow will provide 4 weeks of general GI inpatient attending service during the second half of the academic year. This will entail 5 days of full-day service and most nighttime coverage. There will be at least a senior and junior general GI fellow that the AEF will be supervising.
While on inpatient attending service at Harborview Medical Center, the advanced fellow will have the opportunity to formally train with Drs. Bryan Balmadrid and Yutaka Tomizawa to round out the training. The fellow will also have a chance to hone their attending skills.
Research
Though the Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy Fellowship is high-volume, there are some small research requirements to round out the experience. The fellow is expected to submit at least one abstract to the Digestive Diseases Week Conference for the start year and have another DDW abstract ready to submit for the following year.
